On September 13, the cohort for this year’s LSA programme got together for a 10-days kick-off bootcamp in Vouliagmeni outside of Athens. The team of 11 trainees is composed of global talent with representation from 6 different nationalities and with different levels of academic background and working experience. The primary purpose of the bootcamp is for the trainees to forge relationships between themselves, to build networks in the Lightship organisation, and of course to get fundamental training in the ABC of shipping.
The training concept is based on a practical mix of lectures by senior brokers and operations staff, case studies, and group work exercises with presentations made by the trainees. A fundamental concept is that the trainees will help and support each other throughout the programme, and it is therefore important that good and constructive relationships are built already from the start. In the shipping business, it is always important to relate to the physical and practical aspects of the vessels we handle. During the bootcamp we also organised an excursion to a shipyard outside of Athens. Here, the trainees got the opportunity to learn about the process of getting a vessel into a dry dock, and of course also to inspect the vessel and all its equipment and gearing.
Following on from the bootcamp, the Lightship Academy programme continues with an increasing focus on the broker role in the shipping industry.
The trainees are now continuing their training in 5 different Lightship offices across the globe. From now until the end of December, the training and collaboration will continue over remote video sessions, and of course supplemented with allocated tasks on the local Lightship trading desks. From January, the trainees will be 100% allocated as assistants to senior brokers and mentors on the trading desk. In this position, they will have the opportunity to hone their skills and gain practical experience by working closely with experienced brokers on real market cases and client services.
The class of 2025 will graduate at the end of May 2025.
The application process for the Lightship Academy Class of 2025-26 is now open until January 5th 2025. Start date is in September 2025.
